Bellflower-Somerset Mutual Water Company (BSMWC) has implemented corrected fixed service charges, effective July 1, 2020, addressing a rate-charge discrepancy that previously led to shareholders with meters 1.5 inches or larger being charged the rate for the next smaller-sized meter.
Between July 2017 and July 2020, shareholders with meters 1.5 inches or larger were charged the rate for a meter one size smaller than their actual meter size. For example, shareholders with a 1.5-inch meter were charged the 1.25-inch meter rate, those with a 2-inch meter were charged the 1.5-inch meter rate, those with 3-inch meters were charged the 2-inch meter rate, and so on. Shareholders were notified of the corrected service charge in a letter distributed in April 2020.
BSMWC identified the issue during an internal budget review and immediately worked to resolve the rate-charge error. Shareholders are not being back charged for the difference in rates, which was in their favor.
“BSMWC has implemented a variety of cost-saving measures over the past several years, so we are able to cover the costs related to this bookkeeping error,” said Steve Lenton, BSMWC General Manager. “It’s important for our shareholders to know that our rates are based upon simply covering the cost of providing service and sustaining operations during emergencies. Charging the correct rates will ensure we can continue to provide high-quality cost-effective water service for our community.”
